OSTEOARTHRITIS

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, is a chronic condition which leads to the breakdown of joint cartilage.1 This breakdown is often slow and takes place over several years.2

Cartilage is rubbery and flexible connective tissue.2 It covers the ends of your bones and helps to reduce friction in the joints.2 It is able to do this due to its ability to change shape when compressed.2 Osteoarthritis causes this cartilage to gradually deteriorate.3 This eventually leads to changes in bone shape, and damage to tendons and ligaments, which can be very painful.2

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis develops slowly, and common symptoms include:

  • Joint pain
  • Aching
  • Morning stiffness
  • Swelling of the joints
  • Reduced range of movement4

Causes of Osteoarthritis

There are certain factors that make it more likely to develop osteoarthritis. Some of these include:

  • Age is perhaps the number one factor, with the chances of developing osteoarthritis increasing significantly as you grow older.4
  • Heredity is another factor. The likelihood of developing osteoarthritis increases if you have other family members who have it as well.4
  • Obesity leads to extra weight being put on the joints. This puts the joints under a lot of stress and increases the risk of injury or damage to cartilage over time.4
  • Overuse of the joints can also lead to degeneration. This is often seen in athletes and construction workers.4

How Can I Prevent the Onset of Osteoarthritis?

Things you can do to prevent the onset of this degenerative condition and reduce the stress on your joints include:

  • Staying at your recommended weight
  • Supportive Exercises
  • Getting Rest
  • Having a Healthy Diet1

 Natural Treatments

Glucosamine is naturally found in the cartilage in our bodies.5 It can help relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis.6 It also helps protect against the deterioration of cartilage and is a factor in maintaining joint health.6

Chondroitin Sulfate is a chemical naturally found in cartilage.7 It is often made from shark and bovine sources.7 Chondroitin sulfate helps relieve joint pain.6

Other natural ingredients that have been shown to help relieve joint pain associated with osteoarthritis include Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), Hydrolyzed Collagen, Devil’s Claw, and Fish Oil.6
